The iconic rock band Van Halen dominated the airwaves back in the 1980s. Somehow, they made parachute pants and the mullet cool. The lead singer, David Lee Roth was not just involved in the vocals of the band, he was involved in some of the legal dealings and contract negotiations as well. (For the record, if when I said lead singer, you thought of Sammy Hagar- you should be ashamed of yourself!) The elaborate shows filled with pyrotechnics and other dangerous stunts made the concert venue’s attention to detail and safety protocols paramount. To ensure the venues were reading the contracts and safety protocols, Roth added the “M&M” clause right in the middle of the contract. It stated that if there were any brown M&Ms in their green room snacks, the contract would be voided, and the band got to keep all the proceeds!! It was a tripwire clause. They learned something about the venue if they saw the brown M&Ms.

Jesus has given us an M&M clause as well. He tells us in His word that how we handle our “Money” and “Mouth” will tell us much about our hearts:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

Unfortunately, our wallets will reveal much about our hearts. We can declare our love for Jesus and people all we want, but how we handle our finances will determine if that’s really true. Do you give God your first and best? Are you generous? If not, this might be a tripwire to alert you as to what’s truly going on in your heart.

“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

(Luke 6:45)

My mouth has been a useful and painful indicator of the condition of my heart. All too often, I’ve caught myself having a lazy or even sinful mouth. Dropping some 4-letter word or tearing someone else down in order to get a laugh. When my mouth is foul and lazy, I recognize my heart is off. I immediately start regulating music and entertainment choices for the sake of strengthening my heart. “Garbage in – Garbage out”. What is your mouth revealing about your heart? Are you an encourager? Do you speak life into others? If not, be grateful for the tripwire and get to work on your heart.

If you choose to ignore these tripwires, might I recommend another Van Halen hit…….. “Runnin with the Devil”. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
