In fashion, styles come in and then they go out. Sometimes they stick around for a few years; sometimes the very next year, they are out of style. But do you know what never goes out of style? It’s the Gospel. It’s not in one year and out the next. Jesus’s words, recorded 2,000 years ago, are just as relevant today as they were then.
Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29).
Today, Jesus is saying, “Come to Me.” Come to Him, and you will receive salvation. The moment you receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, eternal life is yours. Jesus said, “Come to Me, and I will give you rest.” We were not meant to walk this life alone.
Jesus is saying, “Come to Me. Take My yoke and learn from Me.” Jesus taught in parables to help people understand biblical principles. A parable is a short story illustrating a moral or spiritual principle.
This leads us to this parable: A yoke is a piece of wood tied around the necks of two animals in order for them to walk together. Often, one side had a large hole and the other a smaller one. This way, the larger, more mature animal would carry the weight and guide the smaller animal. This is what Jesus was saying: I will carry your burdens. I will guide your steps, and I will teach you along the way. These words never go out of style. They are just as true today as they were 2,000 years ago. The yoke of Jesus is perfectly fitted to support and aid us in fulfilling the purpose for our lives.
Jesus also said, “Anyone who has faith in Me will do what I have been doing, and even greater things, because I go to the Father” (John 14:12).
Jesus is saying we will be so united to Him that we will carry out His work by His power and will do the kinds of things that will “bear witness” about Him. And as we do, many will come to Him and believe in Him.
That is God’s promise to us.
Jesus’s words never go out of style.
