Do you realize there are 8,810 promises found in our Bibles? So, what is a promise? A promise is someone’s word that they will act on what they said they would do. A promise from God is a promise He has gone on record that He will do it. A promise is only as good as the one making the promise. People make promises all the time. Even Satan makes promises. In the Garden of Eden, we saw how he promised Eve. He promised her, “You can eat from the tree of good and evil, and you will not die.” And we know what happened: death entered the world—not only physical death but spiritual death.
We live in a world filled with broken promises. Say a friend promises they will always be there for you, and one day, they just stop responding to you. Or a spouse who promises to be faithful and broke that vow. Politicians make promises all the time they don’t keep. A promise is only as good as the one who makes the promise. It’s important we are familiar with God’s promises. Because when God makes a promise, you know you can trust Him because He doesn’t lie.
Numbers 23:19 – God is not human that He should lie, not a human being that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?
God is so good. His promises are there because He loves us. When God’s promises are fulfilled in our lives, it brings Him glory.
2 Corinthians 1:20 – For all the promises of God in Him are yes and amen to the glory of God through us.
To the glory of God through us.
I think of my own life. My prayer is that God would bring me widows who are struggling to find peace and comfort. And just recently, He did just that. I met a woman at the airport who was a widow, and even after 12 years of being a widow, she was still struggling with her husband’s death.
When I shared with her that my Jim had just recently gone home to be with the Lord, she said, “How are you able to be so strong and have such peace about you? I want that.” So, I shared God’s promise with her:
Isaiah 54:5 – …your maker is your husband.
I stand on that promise daily. Jesus is my husband, and I truly experience Him as my husband who loves me comforts me, and protects me. I never feel alone. I wake up in the morning, and He is there. I go to sleep at night feeling His love. By sharing that with her, it brought God the glory that whatever we may need in this life, God has a promise for us we can stand on.
God promises us He will never leave us or forsake us.
Deuteronomy 31:8 – It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
Sometimes we may leave Him, but He is always there for us. He is just a prayer away. God is so good; His love for us is unconditional. He knows us better than anyone else. The more we depend on and open our hearts to Him, the more we will experience His love, His healing, and His comfort.
God has a promise for your future.
Jeremiah 29:11-13 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”
What a wonderful promise this is. God has plans for us; all we have to do is draw close to Him and follow His lead. It’s so very encouraging knowing as we pray He listens to us and gently guides us to seek Him more and more in our lives. May it be our daily prayer: Seek Him with all our heart.
